Some popular dog names come and go. It often happens around the release of a big movie or popular TV show that has a dog in it.
The name may be get adopted by a lot of people for a while and then fade.
Other popular dog names stick around year after year.
That’s a bit of mystery. Perhaps there’s something about the name that just touches a memory or feeling in a lot of people. Names that stay popular for a long time probably do so because people have a fond memory of a pet or movie character from their childhood.
When you hear some of these names, it’s hard not to think of a dog. Some good examples of these are Lassie, Duke, Benji, Snoopy, and Queeny. These kind of names stay popular for long time...maybe even forever.
Others are associated with canine character from TV, movies or even comic strips (I’m thinking of Snoopy and Odie here). I, for one, grew up watching Lassie every week on TV.
Even though we had our own dogs, she was like a “virtual” pet...we felt like we knew her. I was convinced that she was smarter than most people I knew. Ah, fond memories indeed!
Rin Tin Tin and Old Yeller were very popular for a while, but not so much any longer. Some names just don’t catch on for one reason or another. Benji has stayed quite popular for some time now.
Some dog names are closely tied a particular breed. This happens when a beloved character belongs to an easily identifiable breed.
It would be hard for me to give the name “Lassie” to a German Shepherd...it just wouldn't feel right. But, it would feel perfect for a Collie.
